Julian's Birthday party

Created by Dale 5 years ago

I will always remember Julian with great affection. One of life's genuinely lovely and funny/ good guys.

I loved my time at school. Our year and class was full of great individuals. Not an ounce of malice. None of us could punch our way out of a paper bag but we has some quick witted lads with lots of cutting banter and we all stuck together. Julian was obviously in the thick of all this. I can still hear his cheeky face and funny giggle.

He sure gave as good as he got. However, there is one occasion that still makes me laugh and boy did he get some stick. Jean, you are perhaps to blame for this one so thanks lol.

I think it was around 1982/83. MacDonalds was new with very few about. I received a birthday invite to a party at MacDonalds. How exciting, rare American food and a private party too!

About a dozen hormonal teenage boys turned up for this unique event. We were greeted by a unfortunate & attractive young girl with some colouring books, crayons and party hats. She was probably only 16 herself. I am guessing that when she was getting ready for work that morning she didn't imagine she would be hosting a party of spotty hormonal lads who would spend the afternoon staring at her breasts and asking for her phone number... Even Ronald himself took one look at us and did one! The poor girl was removed from party duties for her own safety and sanity & we were 'treated' to a tour of the kitchen by the manager and taught how to cook burgers!

I only saw Julian from time to time over our adult years. Occasional gatherings or in the Brighton before the Blues but I always had great pleasure in reminding him about his party and I did wander if he would repeat it for his 40th.

In return, I got enough stick off Percy I can assure you but unfortunately but I perhaps should refrain from putting it in black and white!

I was in Solihull the other week to say goodbye. Andrew, you were amazing pal. Despite your grief you unselfishly made the hundreds there giggle and smile and remember Julian for exactly what he was  - a top lad and funny as!

As for the kids, well what a credit & how brave. Not just to Julian and your family but to society in general. I just hope they appreciate that all the kind words and stories are truly meant with love and affection. He really was a top bloke who will never ever be forgotten.

Keep Right On & love to all.
